Frequently asked questions about NorthStar and association management

Answers to the questions association boards ask most when considering an association management company, interim executive, or consulting partner.

What is an association management company?

An association management company (AMC) is a firm that provides professional staff, operations, and infrastructure to associations under contract with their boards. Instead of hiring its own employees, an association works with an AMC team that handles leadership, finance, membership, meetings, marketing, and more.

What does NorthStar do?

NorthStar is a boutique association management company offering full-service management, certification and credentialing program management, fractional and interim executive leadership, and project consulting such as strategic planning and member research.

What types of organizations does NorthStar serve?

Small and mid-sized national trade associations, professional and scientific societies, certification commissions, federations, and their foundations. Our project and fractional services are available to associations of any size.

NorthStar is new. Does the team have the depth we need?

The firm was founded in 2026, but the team is not new. NorthStar’s leaders bring more than 100 years of combined association management experience leading national and global organizations, including healthcare, certification, scientific, foodservice, and trade associations.

Will we meet the people who actually serve us?

Yes. You meet your account lead and core team during the process.

What if our account lead leaves or is unavailable?

Every client has a cross-trained team and documented processes. Our model is built so there is no single point of failure.

How much does an association management company cost?

It depends on scope and staffing. Most full-service engagements are an annual management fee, with third-party costs passed through at cost. See our guide: How much does an AMC cost?

Are there hidden fees?

No. NorthStar separates management fees from pass-through costs, passes third-party costs through without markup, and does not make retroactive surprise charges.

Can we start with a project instead of full-service management?

Yes. Many organizations start with strategic planning, a member survey, marketing strategy and execution, conference support, or a fractional executive.

Can NorthStar support our in-house executive director instead of replacing them?

Yes. In a hybrid model, NorthStar provides specialist support — finance, events, membership, certification, or technology — under the direction of your CEO or executive director.

How do you handle the transition from long-tenured staff or another AMC?

With a structured plan: listen and map (days 0–30), shadow (days 31–90), progressive ownership (days 91–180), and durable operations in year one. Formal check-ins at 30, 60, and 90 days keep the board informed.

Will you take over our volunteers’ role in standards or content?

No. Your board and volunteers retain authority over governance, standards, exam content, and scientific or professional content. NorthStar supports and executes.

Will we have to change our software?

No. We work with your existing systems first and recommend changes only when they clearly serve your goals.

Who owns our data and systems?

Your association does. Accounts are held in the association’s name, never in personal accounts, and data remains yours at all times.

How do you protect certification integrity and accreditation?

We manage certification administration but do not participate in exam development, item banking, scoring, or psychometrics. .

Talk with a senior NorthStar leader

Every conversation starts with a 30-minute call with a senior leader. We listen first, then tell you plainly whether full-service management, a project, or fractional leadership fits your situation. Sometimes that answer is “not yet.”
